Philip Halsman was born on May 2, 1906 in Riga, Latvia. Graduatedfrom the German secondary school in Riga. Later he received his education in electrical engineering in Dresden. From 1928 to 1930, a dark streak of events haunted
the photographer: the death of his father, the accusation of the death of his father, prison. Thanks to the family, namely family and friend Albert Einstein, Halsman was released and he emigrated to France. In France,
the photographer collaborated with fashion magazines like Vogue, Vu and Voila soon earned him a reputation
as one of the country's top portrait photographers. And in 1936 he created a double-lens camera (In 1936 Designs
a 9 x 12 cm twin-lens reflex camera and has it built by a cabinetmaker whose grandfather (Alphonse Giroux) built
the first camera for Daguerre.

In 1942, the photographer began working for
Life magazine, and in the following years 101
of his photographs were printed on the cover
of this publication. In 1947, Halsman made one
of the most famous portraits of Albert Einstein.
In 1966, ite was used on a US postage stamp,
and in 1999 it was printed on the cover
of Time magazine, when Einstein
was called the "man of the century.”
In 1941 Halsman meets Salvador Dali. By the end of 1940s they begin to closely work together. In 1948 they create the photograph “Dali Atomicus”, where Dali floats in the air with 3 flying cats and a bucket of water. This image was inspired by the discovery of the planetary atom model. In 1954 Halsman and the aterte surrealist released a collection “Dali’s mustache”. Another outstanding photo performance of Helman’s was a surreal portrait of Dali with large scull, that consisted of seven nude women. Halsman spent three hours placing women according to Dali’s sketch. The work was named “In Voluptas Mors”
The photographer captured many of the artists
in the air. Later, in the same manner, he made jumping portraits of other celebrities, among them the Ford family, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe, Maria Felix and Richard Nixon.
In 1959, Philippe Halsman published “The Leap”, which became a classic in photography.

In 2006, a monument to the photographer was erected in Riga next to the house where his family once lived.
